Dear Jake,
I can't believe how grown up you are. Or how quickly time flies, for that matter. Today we celebrated your very first school graduation! It seems like just yesterday that Mommy took this photo of you on your first day of school last September.
All decked out with your Batman backpack and best buddy, Rummy
Mommy couldn't make it to your end-of-school picnic because she had to work, but that just meant that I got you and Rex all to myself. As you know, whenever the three of us get in the car together there's going to be some headbangin'. (We know Rex is the ringleader, so if Mommy gives us any crap we'll just blame him.)
Ironmen!
Unlike your first day of school when it was cloudy and drizzly, today we were lucky not to get heatstroke. But at least it made for a fun day on the playground.
Funny thing about this preschool business, though. Because your birthday is in October, you get to go to preschool all over again next year! You guessed it: one level of schooling for the price of two!
Okay, okay ... maybe that's not fair. Next year you'll go full time, so I'm sure you'll learn much more than you did this year by only going twice a week. And by waiting a year to start kindergarten, you'll at least be one of the oldest kids in your class every year instead of one of the youngest, which will hopefully give you a physical advantage when it comes to sports in high school!
I have to admit, though, I'm not a huge fan of "preschooling" in general. As I recall from my younger days, regular schooling was boring enough. But Mommy insists kids need "socialization" and you seem to like your teachers and making new friends -- I'm not saying there aren't upsides -- so maybe I'm going about this all wrong.
I just think parents these days are too quick to send their kids off to school. I mean, you're only four. There's plenty of time for school. Only so many years to enjoy being a kid.
So here's to you, little buddy. Happy Graduation. I look forward to having lots of fun with you this summer!
Love,
Daddy
