I've noticed many commentators have pointed out that yet again the government has revealed its incompentence in dealing with natural disasters. Close down the subways, everyone evacuate, stay in your homes! Fear, fear, fear! We're from the government and we're here to help! As I was driving to the gym yesterday, the ABCNews 7 scroll in Arlington posed the question "Was Hurricane Irene caused by global warming?"
Most of us experienced a really bad rainstorm with high winds. This isn't to say that there was no damage done. I know of three deaths. Many have lost power. Some have had their cars and homes damaged. But the end-of-the-world scenario that the government predicted did not happen. But that does not matter. Government agents were able to practice their fearmongering and were able to push the limit of obedience. They have a better idea of just how much they can get away with in an emergency. And that is the lesson I take away from this weekend.
Brutus, I agree and think that more of us are seeing the foolishness of the central govt. trying to control Everything. As Ron Paul says, we need to take control of our lives and be responsible for our own well being. Having the central govt. get involved will only screw the situation up. Katrina, anyone?

Southern Maryland was among the hardest hit by this hurricane, as trees have simply uprooted at the root ball, many landing on homes and cars (my neighbor being one such victim).
I lost three trees within the critical area (within 100 feet of the state's almighty waterways). I'm wondering where the government is. Shouldn't they be showing up to clean up their trees out of my yard? Obviously I don't own them, as I'd be fined (and/or worse) if I touched these trees under otherwise normal circumstances.
