There is no situation that can be made better by calling the police. Sue Aitken found this out the hard way when she called the cops because she was worried about her son. Via Bill Anderson, this story by Radley Balko is almost beyond belief, as 27-year-old New Jersey resident Brian Aitken now faces seven years in prison for being a responsible gun owner.
Seriously, don't ever call the police. For anything. If you can think of any examples of crimes being prevented because the cops were called, please send them along and I will post them. In all of my reading and research, I can't recall offhand even one instance where someone's life or property was saved as a result of calling the police. I can, however, recount dozens of occasions where someone's life was ruined or abruptly ended by doing so.
In fact, I would go so far as to say that you should never call the police unless you're prepared to see violence visited upon either yourself or the person about whom you're calling (unless, of course, that person is a criminal, who will almost always have time to commit his crime and/or flee the scene before the police show up to tape it off and photograph the carnage).
For an unfortunate yet necessary illustration of what can happen when you call the police to "help" someone you love, read this story I wrote in 2007 about Southern Maryland Police State victim Jamie Dean.
holy crap. it's criminal that this judge is beyond reproach for his behavior. not only that, NJ taxpayers should be incensed that they now have to pay for this poor SOB's incarceration.

911 is a sledgehammer. call it as a last resort, only. most people call for issues that they can handle- as soon as it's beyond your ability, then MAYBE call 911.
even if you call 911 for an ambulance or fire service, you're opening your life up to police scrutiny. don't do it, if it can be helped.

I cannot think of a single situation where I would call the police. There is nothing those people can bring to the table that would benefit me or anyone I care about. There certainly is no criminal out there that I can't handle, either within or without my home. As far as I'm concerned, the cops are FAR more deadly than any criminal or gang.

What's terrible is that even though this citizen was eventually pardoned, he still has a criminal record because of it.
