Though I sat through countless mind-numbing teacher education courses at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Geneseo from 1991 to 1996, receiving a bachelor's and master's degree in education in the process, I never once heard the name John Taylor Gatto, outspoken critic of compulsory (government) schooling (article archive here).
This despite the fact that Gatto published his first book, Dumbing Us Down, in 1992, and that he was named New York State Teacher of the Year in 1991.
So much for the tolerance and commitment to academic integrity of liberal arts schools in New York State.
