Writes a friend:
I went to the county to try to get a permit to cut down a tree that is about to fall into the water and take a bunch of land with it, causing more erosion and silt into the water. Thought they would be thrilled that I was trying to prevent this from happening. Wrong... they wanted to charge me $385 for the permit to cut down the tree. I then asked them if it is free to let it fall. They said it was. So I said that is what I am going to do. How ridiculous is that?
Yep, the government's just here to look out for our rights.
Environmentalists don't care about the environment. They, like every other pro-state activist, care about bossing other people around.
Just ran into that recently in my town. Our Quaker Meeting had several diseased red oak trees. As part of our stewardship of the land, we hired someone to cut them down. First to stop the spread of the disease, and second, to protect motorists from falling branches (the trees are along the road).
Some busybody who had no idea of why we were cutting them down scuttled right over to the township building and ratted us out. Apparently we need someone else's permission - and an expensive permit - to cut trees on our own property.
In the end it was resolved; the township officials were a wee bit more sensible than the busybody, and we got the permits with fees waived. But the delay caused us to lose the tree service who had given us a friendly low-cost bid, and derailed the whole project for months. I was more shocked by the whole permit thing than anything else.
Shhh! Don't tell anyone - because my own property is far enough from the road, I cut trees without asking permission. But a neighbor could snitch me out any time...
